PS5: Unreal Engine 5 trumps Xbox next-gen hype

Epic Games has lifted the lid on Unreal Engine 5 and provided our first look at Playstation 5 gameplay.

The nine-minute gameplay ‘demo’ was recorded from the back of a PS5 dev kit so this is the real deal.

UE5 1

It’s also more gameplay than Xbox managed to pump out in last week’s “gameplay” reveal of the Series X.

The demo, “Lumen in the Land of Nanite” show off the two big additions to Unreal Engine 5:

  • Lumen: fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes (ie. ray tracing).
  • Nanite: virtualized micropolygon geometry that allows film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons to be directly imported into Unreal Engine. (ie. everything is going to look hyper detailed, with no loss in quality).

That last one is super important for game developers who spend countless hours pairing down assets to work on a system; Playstation. or otherwise.

UE5 2

Unreal Engine 5 will be available in for developers to preview in early 2021, with a full released slated late in 2021, supporting next-generation consoles, current-generation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS, and Android.

Epic Games will release Fortnite, built with UE4, on next-gen consoles at launch and migrate the game to UE5 in mid-2021.
