Team Sonic Racing: kart racing with a twist

Although at first glance, this game may look like just a Mario Kart clone, Team Sonic Racing has quite a bit more to offer.

The major difference being the team racing aspect. Instead of just racing for first place, players can now compete as part of a team, in a cooperative experience that sees the characters earning points that are tallied up for potential victory by working together in a race. This adds a certain amount of strategy to the tired kart-racing genre that I’ve never seen before.

The other difference I found with Team Sonic Racing, was the level design. Where Mario Kart’s tracks feel very enclosed, Team Sonic Racing boasts wide open raceways that are surrounded by beautiful locales. The racing feels fast and furious, accompanied by some fun power ups, or wisps as they’re called here; you never know what’s going to happen in a race.

Being a huge Sonic fan myself, its great to be able to race as the famous blue hedgehog, his buddies Tails and Knuckles and even to strap in as the big bad of the universe Doctor Eggman. And I love the way characters interact with each other during a race. For example, if you were playing as Shadow the Hedgehog and blew up Metal Sonic with a well-timed missile, Shadow would make a comment specially aimed at that character.

There are plenty of game modes to choose from. Outside of the team racing you will see your racing staples, like single races and Grand Prix’s as well as special Demolition races or the frustrating Drift Challenges. Though you’ll find you’ll probably stick to the Team Races.

Although all this is a lot of fun, at the end of the day it isjust another kart game. I’m not sure if there is a whole lot to bring you back, after a couple of hours of play, I felt like I’d played enough. A great time to be had playing with friends though!

3 out of 5 Stars – A Good Play
