Fish reviews ‘The Grinch’ (2018)

Stay Away! Get Out! Danger! Seriously, Stay Away! Is what I would say if I was a Grinch watching this movie, buuuut I can’t do that. It’s way too much fun!

In the latest take on Dr Seuss’ much-loved story of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, powerhouse Illumination Entertainment (the guys behind those pesky Minions in Despicable Me), bring us a fully animated film, more in line with the original material.

The main thing I expect when watching a kids movie as an adult is to be able to turn my brain off and just have some mindless fun. And The Grinch delivers this by the truckload. Having already nailed a hilarious form of slapstick comedy in the many Minions iterations, Illumination doesn’t hold back. There were many a moment that I was literally laughing out loud. And another thing I’ve come to expect from kids movies these days, is to be hit right in feels. Let me tell you, there is plenty of heartstring pulling going on here.

The characterisation of The Grinch is almost perfect. Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, he is just such a jerk! It is positively delightful to watch him prey on all the goody-goody Who’s of Whoville. But I have to say, that it is his dog, Max who steals the show. This dog just oozes charisma and to watch him attempt to keep a relationship with his toxic master is truly touching.

Finally I have to point out that this is one of the best looking animated features I have seen in a while, from the character designs to the little things like how realistic the snow looks, I just loved being sucked into this world. The Whoville village looks absolutely stunning, their love for all things Christmas has everything shrouded in lights that just make the whole place shine. Then watching the Grinch sneak about with all his excellent gadgets and contraptions to destroy their Christmas is all the more satisfying!

Story wise the Grinch falls victim to the same thing that most movies intended for children do, its predictable. So this may deter a few of the grown ups among us, but if you can channel your inner child (I found it easy, my cinema was packed full of kids!) there is so much fun to be had with this adventure of The Grinch Who Stole Christmas!

4 out of 5 – ‘Should Watch’
